the park

I was doing my usual run in the evening.

Somehow today I did not take my usual path which would have led me past Loyang Point and a few other schools before coming back. Instead, I ran the perimeter of the Loyang Villas, which was physically much tougher because of a very long upslope. Well, I just felt like challenging myself.

True to my own words, the slope was the most demanding part of the run. I finished 3 rounds before I felt really tired but satisfied that I had completed about 5 km and 3 upslopes. Decided to do some static exercises so I proceeded to my estate's park or what we call, The Mariam Estate Park.

When I arrived there, but there wasn't a single soul around. I was later accompanied by a couple and their daughter.

Completed my exercises and I sat on one of the benches.

I then realised that the bench was one that I used to place my things on when I played football at the park in the past.

Many kids from my estate and its surrouding houses used to play football at the park.

Not just young kids. Older kids, teenagers, adolescents, army boys, girls and occasionally, uncles also joined in the fun.

Trees became goalposts, jogging paths became boundaries. It was our Wembley.

Those were very fun times during the weekend evenings. It was simply the place to make friends and it was at here that I got to know many of my neighbours and some became friends.

Then all of a sudden 2 years ago, the Mariam Estate Park "authorities" suddenly decided to ban football from that area, citing damage to the lamp posts and trees and erosion of soil, as well as rowdiness by the people there. They erected a "No Football" sign.

Well, we didn't give a damn about the ban and continued our games.

Heartless enough, the authorities started planting trees in the middle of the open grounds.

It sure worked better than the ban. There simply wasn't enough space to play our games. Every kick will hit a tree. Some knocked themselves into the trees while running. It was frustrating to play.

The following weekend, no one came back to play football. Not even me.

One day somebody found a piece of empty land near my estate and got some of us to play there. But somehow, the attendance got less and less and there aren't anyone playing there these days.
The magic of the park simply wasn't there.

Sometimes when I walk past the park, I just can't help but feel a sense of anguish at the authorities' decision.

Are a few lamp posts more important than kids having fun? Will the growing of new grass ever replace the camaraderie and friendship that could have been forged? Were the trees of more economic value than the children?

Perhaps the pathetic state of the park now is a representation of our next generation. Many children do not have the space or place to play games. They instead, are growing up with computer games and gizmos to fill their spare time.

In my opinion, only by roughing it out can these children build strong characters and traits needed to survive in the future.

My parents' time were, perhaps the best for character development. They had to deal with poverty and politics but they had the land, the space to grow. They were fitter and healthier than us now when they were young.

Somehow the younger kids in my estate are strangers to me now, unlike their elder brothers and sisters.

As I took a second look at the park, it felt no longer a park to me. Gone were the laughters, noise, shoutings and encouragements.

True, it is a very nice-looking and tidy park today.

But it is a soul-less park now.

Sunset

I did something today most people would hardly do in civilian life.

I sat at the porch and just stared at the evening sky.

From the bright red glow of the sun to its setting, the sky slowly faded from blue to purple and to darkness.

It was beautiful and surreal.

For that 30 minutes of time I only felt calmness. No thoughts, no worries. Nothing.

Therapeutic huh? Lol.

5 secs

Just ask the Aussies how much time does that mean to them...

They'll tell you that was how much time left to their world cup dream, till the the darn penalty.

I'm too mortified to go into any details now.

Lucky bastards the Italians.

What Thing 2 Dollars?

That's the question that had been bombarded at me for the past 2 days. And the past 2 weekends as well.

Yup, work.

Been doing some redemption thing for Quakers(yes, the oatmeal company). The deal's about some purchase with purchase thing. The booth is located outside the ntuc at bedok central.

Work starts at 1 pm and ends at around 6+ pm.

Quite a tiring job, having to stand for about 5 hours and doing everything by myself. And there's no chair to sit!

Half the time at work I will be telling those aunties that nothing is going for $2. They have to purchase something before they can redeem the product for $2. Many give me the dirty look after I tell them that. Well, greedy pragmatic lot. Conversations go something like this:

Me: Hi auntie/mdm/sir/miss.

Customer: *Stares at me with a scowl* What thing 2 dollars? (In english, mandarin, teochew or hokkien)

Me: "Oh, Quaker is having a *blah blah*, you can redeem this for 2 dollars. However, you must first spend $10 on certain Quaker products."

Customer: *Points to the back* "So I spend $10 in NTUC, I can buy those for $2."

Me: "What I mean is, *REPEATS EVERYTHING I SAID IN THE OPENING SENTENCE*"

Customer: "ORH!!! Chay must spend $10! Some more on Quaker products. Aiya my family and I dun eat Quaker. Dun wan la..."

Most walk off without a single thanks.

Well, other half of the time at work is devoted to giving out the redemptions, collecting money, advertising and daydreaming.

There's one thing about many older people that I had observed. When they see the $2 deal signage, their eyes lit up and look the most enthusiastic. The moment I look at them, preparing to explain to them about the deal, they look away with nonchalance. Then they'll walk about 5 metres, turn around and look at the booth again. After staring for about 3 mins and scrutinising every single thing about me and the booth, they will finally approach me asking about the deal. Dunno what's the reason but it seems that every elderly person will do the same thing.

One incident was most memorable so far. There were 3 uncles who were very enthusiastic about the $2 thing. Perhaps it was more of greed than liking the food. Afterall, $2 for something that costs $6.70 normally. Without listening to me explain to them fully the whole deal(there were many terms and conditions), they went to buy certain Quaker products there were not part of the promotion. When I told them that what they bought were not redeemable, they started to scold me for not telling them the conditions and almost kicked up a fuss. Luckily a friend was there at the scene and offered to buy the products that were on promotion and let the uncles redeem the products.

That's one thing about many Singaporeans. Without me telling them that certain products were not on promotion, many would simply not read the conditions and end up blaming the world when they buy the wrong things. Something like this:

Me: "Hi!"

Customer: *Chucks me the receipt* "Nah. 2 dollars for that right? Here I got 2 dollars" *Chucks me 2 dollars*

Me: *Scans the receipt* "I'm sorry mdm. The products that you bought are not part of the promotion"

Customer: "WHAT!? Eh you never tell me ealier that I cannot buy these products. Make me waste all the money to buy these things that I dun eat. Wah lao. Why you never tell me earlier? Why not make this an exception?"

Me:"No Mdm I cannot do such things. And I told you just now about the conditions..."

Customer:"No you didn't! Cannot trust Quaker anymore!!" *Walks away in anger*

Sometimes I wonder why the customers buy the products. Do they really want to eat or do they just want the redemption?

On hindsight, this job has taught me quite a number of things as well. The most important would be the patience to deal with difficult customers. Cool-headedness would prevail in many customer-oriented problems. And I will definitely read conditions of any promotions after seeing too many of my countrymen fall into traps. Of course, the ability to stand for 5 hours counts as one too...

England's into the quarter-finals of the World Cup thanks to David Beckham's goal from a free-kick in the 60th minute. It was a very boring match. Hopefully Holland VS Portugal would be better.

Funny stuff

Been rather bored today. Nothing much to watch on television so I watched Black Hawk Down. Again.

Visited mrbrown.com and he has some new entries again. For those who do not know about mr brown, he's a author of the website named after his pseudonym that discovers the dysfunctional side of Singapore. Nothing vulgar there; only loads of laughter.

His latest entry: http://www.mrbrown.com/blog/2006/06/today_a_lifesav.html. Talks about how he changed his lifestyle after having children.

And not to forget, the podcasts that mrbrown and mr miyagi produce. Super funny and I bet my house that it would make you laugh.

The lastest one: http://www.mrbrown.com/blog/2006/06/browncast_early.html.

The podcast takes a swipe at a MDA(Media Development Authority) regulation that requires local housholds to indicate to them if they DO NOT own a television set.

Duh!

Birthdays

Ok I'm a bit late(wonder why i always have late entries...) but this is what happened over the weekend.

Des' Birthday...

Yup des' birthday fell on Saturday. After days of contemplation(including the night we spent till 4am at drew's house!) on where to dine, des finally settled on The Altivo Bar on the very top of Mount Faber.

D'Masculinity! Des' right behind the flower pot

I was quite charmed by the place. Nice ambience, great scenery overlooking the city and live music as well. Food was ok though. Nonetheless a nice place to bring your loved ones there.

We had to alter our plans after the dinner. Wanted to drink at The Glass Bar but it was packed. So off we went to Andy's house for our binging session.

Jinfu and Des. Before the drinks.

As the birthday tradition of 4D decreed, the birthday boy had to down his ale.(unless you bola kechil) And boy was Des filled to the brim as we kept giving him shot after shot of bailey's. And vodka. The result: A bad alcohol rash and an hour of non-stop puking. The boy can't hold his ale! Just kidding haha. But it was very sporting of des to drink with us even though he does not normally drink. Cheers to the man!

Stayed over at di's house and returned home the next day.

But but, the partying wasn't over yet...

Pang's Birthday

Pang's birthday was one day after des'. Pang(Gerald) is one of the first few people from arts fac whom I knew(I'm from science =]) from the j1 australian trip. Subsequently got to know more arts people when I played soccer with them. The rest was history. They are definitely a cool bunch of people.

Pang held the celebrations at a chalet. Reached there earlier than most people. Met up with many of the arts people that I had not seen in ages. Ate and caught up with many people. The usual stuff: uni course, future etc. Stayed overnight there in the end. At around 5 am, 7 of us went to play dota at a lan shop at downtown east.

There was a comical scene at the lan shop. When we got to the lan shop, we asked the owner what was the score between France and South Korea. The MAN answer:" 1-1. Henry scored for France." *Sniggers* Many of us tried to stifle our laughter. Nope, nothing unusual but he said "Henry" in the ENGLISH pronounciation. Wahahaha!

Went home at 7am and slept till 3pm.

Oh, and when I thought there were no more birthdays left...

Chng's Birthday

Chng, the other Gerald, invited me to his birthday as well. It was held at his house on the evening of Tuesday. Went with Weizhong before that to buy him a gift and we got him a sling bag. Chng's affair was much more simple and cosier 'cos he didn't invited too many people. Met up with the arts people again! And some other tpjc friends whom I had not seen since graduating. Watched Ecuador Vs Germany before leaving. Germany was awesome, giving Ecuador no chance at all in the game.

Oh btw, Germany, Ecuador, England, Sweden, Portugal, Mexico, Holland and Argentina have all qualified for the second round of the world. Hopefully Ghana and Australia will make it through tonight. Keep your eyes glued on the motionbox.

Au Revoir!

Futbol

Been a very very tiring week..... watching football.

Sleeping at almost 3am daily seems to be taking a toll on me. Been feeling the blues today. And a slight hint of frustration, even though I do not know what I'm frustrated at. Just got the 'paik chek' feelin'.

Oh well working tomorrow afternoon at NTUC Bedok, doing some redemption thing. And received news today that I have to work alone after the company which I had been working for changed some regulations. That means drew is taking Sunday.

Haha just finished watching the Argentina VS Serbia & Montenegro match. It was truly a performance worthy of champions by the Argentines. 6 superb goals, against the Serbian defence which only conceded 1 during the qualifying stages. And I must say Lionel Messi is a player to watch out for in the future.

Final Score: Argentina 6 - 0 Serbia & Montenegro

Bad Day

Daniel Powter

Where is the moment we need at the most

You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
They tell me your blue skies fade to grey
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carryin' on

You stand in the line just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the coffee to go
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces everytime
And I don't need no carryin' on

Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
You had a bad day

Well you need a blue sky holiday
The point is they laugh at what you say
And I don't need no carryin' on

You had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day

(Oh.. Holiday..)

Sometimes the system goes on the blink
And the whole thing turns out wrong
You might not make it back and you know
That you could be well oh that strong
And I'm not wrong

(yeah...)

So where is the passion when you need it the most
Oh you and I
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost

Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
You've seen what you like
And how does it feel for one more time
You had a bad day
You had a bad day

Spain beat Ukraine 4-0 in the World Cup Group H match. Spain dominated the match from the beginning and it came to no surprise when Xabi Alonso(Liverpool) scored the opening goal. Further goals from David Villa(2, Valencia) and Fernando Torres(Atletico Madrid) won the game for the Spaniards. In the end, the Ukrainians were taught a lesson how to play football.

Almost Love

That's the name of the Korean romance/comedy movie of 2006.

Quite a cool movie I must say, especially for those who like Korean romance films.

Story is about two platonic childhood friends who, when they are attached to other people, realised that their simple friendship has evolved into a romance that they find hard to confess. There's a twist nearing the end of the movie involving the male character, Ji-Hwan. Want to know the ending? Go watch for yourself(or with your girlfriend) and find out the ending!

Hmm... I realised that I have contributed quite a number of entries these few days. Haha probably too free in my life now. Well, it's going to change soon once I enter university.

Received a mail from SMU today regarding school fees matriculation. Have to go down one of these days to settle some administrative issues.

Oh ya received a letter about the sports camp too. Hell yea I'm going to join it. Think it's gonna be fun and I also got Jinfu to join it. It'll be a good way to get to know some people whom I might be studying with in the future too.

Btw, Korea had beaten Togo 2-1 in the match that started at 9 pm. Yes!

Ole! Ole! Ole!

Die Welt zu Gast bei Freunden
(A Time to make Friends)

Courtesy Of fifaworldcup.yahoo.com

Yup so the moment in the football world that everyone is talking about now has arrived.
Once in every four years, we would get to catch glimpses of the best players in the world coming together to play in the most prestigious football tournament.

I have always liked the World Cup. Not because of betting! Personally I do not like to bet on football matches.

I like the world cup because it produces some of the most magical moments in football. Think Johann Cryuff's goals, Maradona's 'Hand of God',Michael Owen's spectacular goal against Argentina in '98, Senegal's shock win over France in '02, South Korea's dream run to the semis in the same year.

But it is not just the goals or the wizardries that make the world cup special. When the whole team celebrates a goal scored, the camarederie displayed is amazing. When opposing players involved in rough tackles help each other up and shake hands, I can't deny that I had not been touched. One would just have to go back to the last World Cup to remember something very touching that happened.

I believe it was the 3rd/4th placing playoff between South Korea and Turkey. The match was full of passion, the 2 countries having supporters who were very patriotic. The South Koreans played well but were beaten by an even better Turkey. At the very end of the match, something incredible happened. Instead of walking off as usual at the end of the match, the Turkish and Korean players joined hands and cheered, thanking the passionate fans for their support. I had never seen such a thing in football before. For that moment in time, all social, racial, cultural and political boundaries were cast aside. There was only friendship. Needless to say, it was a very heartwarming feeling.

Let there be only ties of friendship and none of enmity during this period.

"The gains in life come slowly and the losses come on suddenly. You work for years to get your life the way you want it and buy the big house and the time share on Antigua and one afternoon you’re run down by a garbage truck and lie in the intersection, dazed, bloodied, your leg unnaturally bent, and suddenly life becomes terribly challenging for six months."

How apt the description of life at times...

Growing Up?

I was taking a very long bus ride today when I suddenly thought of BD's entry almost a week ago.

He mentioned about growing up.

Not growing up per se, but from that of an adolescent to an adult, mentally and emotionally.

This year is the 'coming-of-age' year for many of my peers as well as myself. We will turn 21.

I thought long and hard. What really makes us an adult?

Is it just the age of 21? Or the privileges we will have? Or the rights? Or the responsibilties? Or just the things we do can affirm our place in the adult world?

I think I know just the answer. But I hope I can get some opinions. Do you know the answer?
